What to Do After a Car Accident — Before You Call the Insurance Company

If you’ve just been in a car accident, your first thought is probably, “What now?” Between the shock, the damage to your car, and the calls from insurance companies, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But what you do in the first 24 hours after a crash can make all the difference in protecting your rights and your claim.

As an attorney who has helped countless car accident victims navigate this process, here’s what I recommend you do before speaking with the insurance company.

1. Get Medical Attention — Even If You Feel “Fine”

Many people walk away from an accident thinking they weren’t hurt. But adrenaline can mask pain for hours or even days. Common injuries like whiplash, concussions, or soft-tissue damage don’t always show immediate symptoms.
Get checked out by a doctor right away. Your health comes first — and the medical record will also be crucial evidence if you pursue a claim later.

2. Document Everything

Take photos and videos of the accident scene, vehicle damage, road conditions, and any visible injuries. If there are witnesses, get their names and contact information. The more evidence you collect early on, the stronger your case will be.

3. Don’t Admit Fault

Even saying “I’m sorry” can be used against you later. Stick to the facts when talking to police or others at the scene. Let the investigation — and your attorney — determine who’s responsible.

4. Be Cautious With the Insurance Adjuster

Insurance companies may sound friendly, but their goal is to minimize payouts. They might ask for a recorded statement or try to get you to settle quickly. Politely decline to discuss details until you’ve spoken to a lawyer. Once you sign or say something on record, it’s hard to undo.

5. Contact a Car Accident Attorney Early

An experienced attorney can help you handle medical bills, lost wages, and property damage — and ensure you’re not pressured into accepting less than you deserve. The sooner you involve a lawyer, the easier it is to preserve evidence and strengthen your claim.

At James Piccolino Law, we know how stressful an accident can be. You don’t have to deal with the insurance companies and paperwork alone. We’ll take care of the legal side so you can focus on recovery.
